How to Compete Against the Big Four- and Win
Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook (I guess you could throw in Microsoft). How do you compete against these companies? These are some of the most cutthroat companies out there. They will copy your idea faster than you can get your idea to production, let alone copyright. They know about your idea before you do. So how do you win? How do you beat the people that can have it put into their own market places before you blink? Here's a few strategies:
1. Speed
Just like David beating Goliath you need to get your butt and your business moving. Get your product out as soon as possible. If it's an app, you need it in every marketplace and you need it now. Soon enough these Goliaths will have it made/developed/researched/designed before you put down your morning coffee. So be faster. Get it published. Get it recognized. Get it so you're big enough that you are getting offers from the big companies and they can't replicate it because your brand is associated with your product.
2. Adapt
Don't be afraid to change your product or go down new avenues. The reason these companies are the Big Four is because they adapt into areas that they have no business being in and they excel at it. Amazon had no reason to be a streaming service (they sell goods) and now they are similar to Netflix. Netflix for that matter evolved to produce their own content so we can't cancel our subscription. Google was a search engine but now they have their own marketplace, website creator, social media, OS for most of the worlds smartphones, best map service, etc. The point is don't be afraid to change. Excel at what you do, then adapt.
3. Market
Throw any capital you have left and go get some more from investors immediately and market the crap out of your product. How you are different is usually just whoever sticks first. Let me give you an example you may not know about but is very pertinent. PUBG, Fortnite.
So out of nowhere about a year ago, PUBG started to gain popularity. It's unique video game where you are dropped on an island with 100 other people and its basically hunger games. You find weapons and make sure you're the last man standing. So naturally this got popular because it's a cool idea. Well soon after this got popular, Fortnite came out. Fortnite is like the cartoon version of PUBG. Fortnite started to do well because instead of paying for it, Fortnite offers their game for free (with in game purchases optional). That attracted people to Fortnite over PUBG but it still wasn't nearly as popular. However, Fortnite beat PUBG to going on Xbox and Playstation. Now Fortnite is probably as big if not bigger.
Which leads me to my next point:
4. Find Your Niche
True of all business, you must FIND YOUR NICHE. Figure out what makes you different and make that your business. If you are great with millennials, MARKET MILLENNIALS and build your product around that. If you are a fluke app that I'm gonna delete after 2 weeks because it takes up space on my phone, find a reason for me to keep you. The thing is, there is so much in tech but there is so much room to grow. Look at these ideas. They were all not that revolutionary but they filled a need and ended up being revolutionary. These companies aren't trying to be Google, but they could eventually be if they follow this formula.
